Best Movies of 2018 – Best of the Techs
Continuing to look at the best movies and performances of 2018, here is a look at the technical awards. These are the awards I think we take for granted. The editing, costumes, and production, to name a few, are some of the most important aspects of a films greatness. Here are my picks for the best from 2018.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY – HEREDITARY
Runner Up: First Reformed
- Ari Aster’s masterful debut offers up plenty of scares, tension, and shows us that we can’t control what our family has given us.
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY – BLACKkKLANSMAN
Runner Up – Widows
- BlackKklansman uses smarts, wit, comedy, and drama to tell this incredible true story.
ENSEMBLE – WIDOWS
Runner Up – Black Panther
- Everyone in the ensemble of Widows is firing on all cylinders and it’s one of those movies where every time you watch it, somebody different will be your favorite performance.
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY – IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK
Runner Up – Roma/Cold War
- We got a pair of black and white stunners this year in Roma and Cold War, but the colors and camera work of Beale Street represents so much emotion in film, it’s impossible to not award.
EDITING – WIDOWS
Runner Up – Avengers: Infinity War
- Widows moves at a lightning pace, pulling twists and turns at every corner and highlighting the films thrilling action, complex plot, and masterful performances.
COSTUMES – BLACK PANTHER
Runner Up – If Beale Street Could Talk
- Black Panther’s greatest strength is the immersion in its culture and its world and part of that are the colorful, authentic costumes.
PRODUCTION DESIGN – BLACK PANTHER
Runner Up – Crazy Rich Asians
- The best looking Marvel to date, the beauty, depth, and detail in Wakanda acts as another character in the movie.
VISUAL EFFECTS – AQUAMAN
Runner Up – Mary Poppins Returns
- The animated Vaudeville sequence is great in Mary Poppins, but the size, complexity, and madness of Atlantis is something I still haven’t gotten over.
MAKE UP – UNCLE DREW
Runner Up – Vice
- Sure, Vice made everyone look like their respective characters, but the hair and beard work to make this NBA legends unrecognizable (I mean, just LOOK at Nate Robinson!) was one of 2018’s biggest surprises.
SCORE – INCREDIBLES 2
Runner Up – If Beale Street Could Talk
Beale Street’s score is truly beautiful and heartbreaking, riding with the films emotional arc. But Giacchino pulls out a heart-racing score that carries the load in the film’s biggest moments.
SONG – “I’LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN” from A STAR IS BORN
Runner Up – “All the Stars” from Black Panther
- “Shallow” is the best moment in A Star is Born, but “I’ll Never Love Again” is the emotional climax of the film and is a song that should be played at weddings for years to come.
